The Gambia National Internet Governance Forum



Background Information

The National Internet Governance Forum, the Gambia is organized representing all key stakeholders in the Gambia represented through a National steering committee.

The Gambia Internet Governance Forum was initiated in late 2009, after the start of the West African Internet Governance forum. Since 2010 the Gambia hosted three National Internet Governance forum, the last been in 2012. Due to the restrictive nature of the last dictatorial government of former President Jammeh, the National Internet Governance Forum was stopped after its 3rd edition. Reasons where lack of open access to internet resources and an enabling environment where freedom of expression was respected.

Since the coming of the new government of the Gambia led by President Adama Barrow in January 2017, the Gambia has joined back the community of democratic nations where freedom of expression and civil liberties are fully respected.

The country is now fully back in organizing its National Internet Governance Forum; the first to happen aftter dictatorship July 2018.
